We've only been going to the Catfish Joint for the past few months. I don't think it has been open for very long. A good friend wanted to try it one day at lunch, so off we went. We have been back many times since then. It became a favorite of Glenn’s also, when I shared the secret with him.

The Catfish Joint is truly a mom and pop restaurant. Many times the owners are in the joint, waiting on customers or cooking in the back. It is located in a little bitty storefront in a strip shopping center with postage stamp-sized tables (they have one six top table, the rest are two tops), but it is always clean and the food is great. The atmosphere is very casual, with beverages served in cans and bottles with ice-filled glasses delivered if you want.

Of course, the first time we tried the Catfish Joint, we had to try the catfish. I had it fried and it was deee-licious. Hand breaded on site with a very thin coating, the catfish is fresh and tasty. The Catfish Joint serves two different “cuts” of catfish, the filet which is boneless, and fingerlings, which are whole fish, bones and all. Many people like the fingerlings. I prefer mine without bones, thank you! J

But, the Catfish Joint serves seven other types of fish besides catfish. They have whiting, grouper, haddock, flounder, Mahi Mahi, tilapia, and my personal favorite, Basa. I had never tried Basa before, but I  Basa!  It is a lovely light, white-fleshed fish. I cannot stand fish that tastes fishy. I know, strange, but ok, I’ll own it. I don’t like fishy fish.

The Catfish Joint will prepare the fish one of three different ways, fried, blackened, or pan seared.  You have your choice from twelve different sides, ranging from fries and a really decent potato salad to Southern favorites like homemade collard greens and fried okra.

Fish is not the only choice for your meal. The Catfish Joint also offers a variety of seafood including oysters, shrimp, clams, scallops, and other seafood. One of our favorite things is to order an appetizer of conch fritters with their killer dipping sauce. Nice chunks of conch inside of a surprisingly light fritter batter and deep fried until golden brown. Fantastic! They also have chicken items, but I’ve never tried any of them. I mean, why would you go to a fish joint and eat chicken? Ok, maybe if you had kids or other picky eaters with you, but the fish is so good that I can’t bring myself to try the chicken.

The Catfish Joint offers specials pretty much every day. Check the blackboard as well as the menu when you eat there to see any new items.

Now, of the times (probably 10 or more times) I have eaten at the Catfish Joint, I can honestly say that I have only had one meal that I wasn’t crazy about. It wasn’t terrible, just wasn’t that great. I ordered the clams and I really didn’t like the batter on the clams. It was different from their normal batter and was thick and a little hard. The clams underneath the batter were good, but it wasn’t their best. I will say that their hush puppies are really, really good every time.

The prices at the Catfish Joint are reasonable, further adding to the appeal. The meal baskets range in price from about $6.50 to $8.99 with most of them around $8.00. So plan on a trip to the Catfish Joint when you’re hungry for fish. You’ll enjoy it!
