Crock Pot Spicy Sloppy Joes

Everyone needs these types of recipes. Delicious hot meals whenever you need it without any fuss!


With fall sports in full swing and a nip in the air, an easy family-friendly hot sandwich recipe is in order. Crock Pot Sloppy Joes fit the bill well. The hardest part of the preparations is browning the ground beef. See, easy!

We love these tasty sandwiches. The ingredients combine and create a juicy, mildly sweet sandwich filling with the smallest hint of heat from the jalapeño peppers. The amount of hot peppers shown in the recipe is only enough to give you a hint of heat. If you like spicy things, at least double the amount. If you don’t like any heat, leave it out or better, substitute the same amount of green bell pepper instead. The pepper does give it a nice flavor.

Sloppy Joes always make me think of football games, colorful leaves and crisp mornings. Well, colorful leaves and crisp mornings ain’t happenin’ in Florida right now, but I still get hungry for them this time of the year. This recipe is particularly convenient because you can brown the meat the night before, combine all of the ingredients and refrigerate overnight. In the morning, pour everything into the crock pot and start it up. Or do it in the morning, it only takes about 15 minutes to pull it all together.  When everyone gets home from wherever schedules scattered them, scoop the meat mixture onto buns, add toppings and add a side dish and eat. I particularly like these sandwiches with sweet pickle slices or sweet pickle relish on top.

We found this recipe in the Better Homes and Gardens Slow Cooker Family Dinners cookbook and clarified the directions slightly.

Crock Pot Spicy Sloppy Joes

Makes 8 sandwiches



1 ½

pounds lean ground beef


cup chopped onion


clove garlic, minced


6 oz. can of vegetable juice


cup ketchup


cup water


tablespoons sugar or no calorie, heat stable, granular sugar substitute


tablespoons chopped canned jalapeño peppers (optional), more if you like it spicy


tablespoon prepared mustard


teaspoons chili powder


teaspoons Worcestershire sauce


hamburger buns, plain, sesame or whole wheat, split and toasted if desired


Shredded cheese (cheddar, jack or other cheese) (optional)


Sweet pickle slices or sweet pickle relish, chopped onion (optional)





1.     In a large skillet, brown the ground beef, onion and garlic over medium heat until meat is brown and onion is tender. Drain off the fat.

2.     While meat mixture is cooking, combine vegetable juice, ketchup, water, sugar or substitute, jalapeno peppers (if desired), mustard, chili powder and Worcestershire sauce. Stir in the meat mixture.

3.     Cover and turn the slow cooker on low heat for 6 to 8 hours or on high heat for 3 to 4 hours. Spoon meat onto bun bottoms. If desired, sprinkle cheese, add relish or pickle slices or other toppings and cover with top of bun.
