Light and Spicy Marinated Shrimp

Saucy and moist, these shrimp rock!

Light and Spicy Marinated Shrimp are a perfect party food. Easy to eat, the fresh shrimp goes so well with the slightly spicy sauce. It is so nice to serve a lighter, healthier food after weeks of heavier Holiday feasts. And this dish is super simple to make. Mix it up a few hours before you want to serve them, cover them up and store them in the refrigerator until you are ready to plate them.  

The ingredient list is somewhat long, but don’t let it scare you away from this recipe. The amounts used are small and it comes together quickly. It is easy to double or triple the batch if you are planning to feed a large group.  

We used frozen pre-cooked shrimp to save time, but this is even better with freshly cooked shrimp. The larger shrimp work really well with this marinade, but smaller ones can be used to save on food costs. 

We found this light and easy recipe in a neat little appetizer cookbook by the Winnetka Woman’s Club call Grand Openings An hors D’oeuvre Recipe Book. We made some slight modifications, but stayed mostly true to their recipe.

Light and Spicy Marinated Shrimp

Serves 6 to 8 people




pounds medium-large shrimp, deveined and cooked


large clove garlic, minced


cup celery, finely chopped


tablespoons chives, minced


tablespoons high quality olive oil


teaspoon paprika


teaspoon salt (optional)


tablespoons fresh lemon juice (about ½ of a lemon)


teaspoon hot pepper sauce, more if you want it more spicy


tablespoons chile sauce


tablespoons ketchup


tablespoons prepared horseradish, drained


tablespoon Dijon-style mustard




1.     At least 4 hours before you plan to serve them, place the shrimp in a zip top-style bag or a container with a lid. Mix the remaining ingredients in a glass bowl or large measuring cup.

2.    Pour the marinade over the shrimp and toss them to coat the shrimp completely with the sauce. Remove the air from the zip top bag and seal it or if using a container, put the lid on tightly. Store in the refrigerator until needed, stirring the shrimp in the marinade periodically to ensure they remain coated.

3.    To serve, remove the shrimp from the marinade and arrange them attractively on a serving platter or in a decorative dish. Discard the marinade to avoid contamination.
